What Is a Financial Coach, and Do You Need One?

What is a financial coach and do I need one?
A financial coach helps you build better habits, behaviours, and confidence around money: budgeting, goal setting, and staying accountable. Unlike a financial adviser, a coach doesn't recommend specific products or investments. If your struggle is more about behaviour than strategy, coaching is usually the better starting point.
What a financial coach actually does
Coaching sessions typically focus on where your money goes, what habits are getting in the way of your goals, and how to build systems that stick. It's less about spreadsheets and more about the decisions behind the spreadsheet, why you overspend on some things and not others, why saving feels hard even when you earn enough.
Coach versus adviser: the real difference
A financial adviser in Australia holds an AFSL (or operates under one) and can recommend specific financial products, strategies, or investments tailored to your situation. A financial coach generally can't and shouldn't do that. Coaching is about the habits and mindset underneath your financial decisions; advice is about the specific product or strategy decisions themselves. Plenty of people benefit from both, at different times, for different reasons.
Signs coaching might help
If you've read the budgeting guides, downloaded the apps, and still find yourself back where you started every few months, the issue usually isn't information, it's implementation. That's the space coaching sits in: building the habits and accountability that make the information stick.
Signs you might need something else
If your questions are about specific investment decisions, tax structuring, or superannuation strategy, that's advice territory, and it's worth speaking to a licensed adviser directly rather than a coach.
