Financial Coach vs Financial Advisor: What's the Difference?

What is the difference between a financial coach and a financial advisor?

A financial adviser is licensed (holds or operates under an AFSL) to recommend specific financial products, strategies, and investments tailored to your circumstances. A financial coach focuses on habits, behaviour, and financial education, and does not give personal financial advice or recommend specific products. They solve different problems, and knowing which one you need saves time and money.

What a financial adviser does

An adviser looks at your full financial picture, income, assets, debts, goals, risk tolerance, and provides specific recommendations: which super fund, which insurance structure, which investment strategy. This comes with legal obligations, disclosure requirements, and in Australia, an AFSL behind it.

What a financial coach does

A coach works on the layer underneath the strategy: why you spend the way you do, how to build a budget you'll actually stick to, how to set and reach savings goals, how to build financial confidence generally. A good coach is upfront that they are not providing personal financial advice.

Why the distinction matters

Getting this mixed up is a real risk. Someone giving you specific investment recommendations without an AFSL isn't coaching, and it isn't compliant. On the flip side, someone who only wants help building a savings habit doesn't need to pay adviser fees for that.

Which one do you need?

If your question starts with "should I invest in..." or "which super fund...", that's advice territory, speak to a licensed adviser. If your question is closer to "why can't I stick to a budget" or "how do I stop overspending", coaching is the better fit.

They can work together

Plenty of people use both at different points: coaching to build the habits and confidence, advice for the specific product and strategy decisions. Neither replaces the other.
